Every cat is different

How owners approach the transition to the CatGenie influences how well cats accept their new litter tray. Since 2010, we have gathered experience with nearly 125,000 cats and their owners and worked with behaviour consultants and trainers. The owner’s attitude is crucial here.

Be patient.

Many cats accept the CatGenie quickly, but some need a week or longer. The best way to succeed is: don’t rush things.

Proceed gently, but stick to a clear approach – be confident and consistent.

If 2 of your 3 cats are using the CatGenie, don’t switch back to a litter tray. This confuses the users. Cleaning it more frequently makes the CatGenie more appealing to ‘non-users’. Be confident: surveys of CatGenie owners show that 90% of cats shown the tray with granules know that this is their litter tray and will use it. If a cat needs more time, there is no need to worry. During the settling-in period, it is actually normal and harmless if cats do not do their business in the first 24–48 hours.

Follow these steps

If you feel confident that your cats have accepted the CatGenie, you may skip steps. If one or more cats need more time, repeat the relevant step – for as long as necessary.

STEP 1.

Place the CatGenie in its designated spot. Run a cleaning cycle to see how it works, check the setup and satisfy your curiosity. You know your cats: do they find it exciting? Are they rather sceptical? Depending on their personality, let them watch – or close the door temporarily. Until they’ve got used to it, it’s best to start the cleaning cycle using the START button rather than an automatic setting. (This depends on your cats.) PS: Clean frequently at first.

STEP 2.

Let your cats explore the CatGenie. Leave the door open. Give them treats at the location. Praise them when they’re curious. Don’t make a big fuss about the CatGenie; just carry on as normal.

STEP 3.

If the CatGenie is in a different spot to the old litter tray, move the old litter tray to the new spot. If it needs to be moved a long way, behaviour experts recommend moving it bit by bit over time to the new location so that your cats can get used to it gradually. If your cats catch on quickly and start using the CatGenie – all the better. Do not mix litter into the CatGenie’s washable granules; this causes malfunctions and makes it harder for them to accept.

STEP 4.

If the old litter tray is in the same place as the CatGenie, leave it there, but do not clean it anymore. Clean the CatGenie daily – about once or twice per cat per day, even if you think it isn’t being used yet. Cat urine is not visible in the CatGenie granules. 

Let your cats get used to the sounds, smells and the mere presence of the CatGenie. Very important: behave in a relaxed and natural manner when near the CatGenie. Keep the area clean and cat-friendly (toys, treats).

STEP 5.

For the first one to two days, start the cleaning cycles manually. During the first week – depending on their temperament – run the CatGenie when the cats are not nearby, in case the new sounds startle them. Many cats are not bothered by the noise or movement from the start. They will soon associate the sounds and fresh scents with an always clean litter tray. Praise and reward the cats when they use it. Do not follow them into the “toilet”. Do not force a cat into the CatGenie.

STEP 6.
