Further FAQs
Is CatGenie SaniSolution safe for cats?
Yes! SaniSolution120 is safe for cats. SaniSolution (both unscented and fresh scent) contains the same ingredients used to disinfect surgical and examination areas in veterinary practices. The liquid in the reservoir is highly concentrated – in this form, it is only safe when stored in the hopper.
How long does SaniSolution last?
- Cat Activation mode: approx. 240 cycles
- Auto-Set mode: approx. 120 cycles
- IMPORTANT: Always keep a spare SaniSolution cartridge to hand.
Does SaniSolution liquefy solid components?
No. SaniSolution is used to clean and disinfect the biodegradable, washable granules, the GenieHand and the tray.
Can I refill the SaniSolution cartridge?
No. The cartridge is not refillable. The Smart Cartridge mechanism dispenses exactly the required amount for each of the three washing phases in the cleaning cycle (each phase requires a different amount of solution). SaniSolution cleans the granules and tray optimally whilst protecting the mechanical components of the unit.
Is the CatGenie environmentally friendly?
Yes. The Smart Cartridge with SaniSolution replaces cat litter. Unlike all types of litter, all SaniSolution ingredients, the container and the washable granules are environmentally friendly, biodegradable and recyclable.
What happens if a cat is inside the CatGenie when a cleaning cycle is due to start?
GenieEyes sensors detect when a cat is in the tray. A cleaning cycle only starts once all cats have left the CatGenie.
Will my water bill go up with the CatGenie?
Usually not. The usage is roughly equivalent to flushing the toilet a few times more often.
What happens to the waste water?
The waste water is safely discharged into the mains drainage system.
- Bathroom/toilet use: The drain hose hangs over the toilet rim; the waste water flows into the toilet.
- Laundry room use: The waste water drains into the washing machine’s drain pipe.
Can waste water get into the washing machine?
If connected correctly: No. If the CatGenie drain hose is properly attached to the washing machine’s drain pipe, no contaminated water can get into the laundry. This pipe leads directly into the sewer or septic tank.
NOTE: The hose inserted into the drain pipe must be no longer than 12 cm.
Can a standard toilet overflow if CatGenie waste water flows into it?
No. The water level automatically drops back to normal levels. Overflowing is only possible if the drain is blocked.
What happens if solid residues remain on the GenieHand?
During the three wash cycles, the GenieHand is cleaned with water, SaniSolution and washable, biodegradable granules.
Do the granules absorb dirt?
No. The granules are cleaned very quickly and are not made from the same materials as conventional litter. Their shape is designed to meet cats’ need to scratch and cover.
Are the CatGenie granules safe? What if my cat swallows them?
Yes. The granules are safe and consist of a non-toxic combination of natural and synthetic materials. If swallowed, they simply pass through the digestive tract again.
Where is the best place to put the CatGenie?
Ideal locations are the laundry room, bathroom/toilet or a utility/plant room.
Requirements:
- Cold water supply (e.g. from the inlet for a washing machine, washbasin or toilet)
- Drain (washing machine drain pipe or toilet)
- Mains socket

Does the CatGenie take up a lot of space? How much?
Please measure in advance to check if the CatGenie will fit:
- Height: 53 cm
- Depth: 61 cm
- Front width: 48 cm
- Bottom width (base): 43 cm
- Top width: 41 cm

Is installation difficult?
Not at all. You don’t need to be a plumber. The package includes very detailed instructions for assembly and installation.
Setup in the bathroom / toilet
Installation requires a one-off DIY connection to fresh COLD water, a toilet and a power socket.
- Turn off the main water supply as a precaution.
- Connect to the cold water pipe from the toilet or washbasin using the supplied self-tapping valve.
- Screw the CatGenie inlet hose onto the valve (do not over-tighten or twist it).
- Turn the main water supply back on, open the valve and check for leaks.
- Hang the drain hose over the toilet rim and under the seat – the toilet remains usable.
- Plug into the socket (~30 sec.).
- Pre-programme the CatGenie (up to 4× daily automatically) or start it via the button.

Installation in the utility room

- Close the cold water valve.
- Unscrew the inlet hose from under the valve.
- Connect the hose to the supplied ¾-inch T-adapter; attach the T-piece to the water pipe.
- Attach the CatGenie inlet hose to the T-adapter, then turn the cold water back on.
- Hang the drain hose into the washing machine drain pipe – this does not interfere with the washing machine.
- Plug into the socket. Programme the CatGenie (1–4 times daily) or start it at the push of a button.
How is the cleaning cycle activated?
The CatGenie has a motion sensor that detects when your cat is using the litter tray. As soon as your cat has finished and leaves the tray, the CatGenie automatically starts a cleaning cycle with three phases:
- Solid waste is scooped up with the GenieHand, liquefied and drained away.
- The CatGenie washes the litter with cold water and SaniSolution (fresh scent or unscented). This disinfects, scrubs and cleans the tray and litter.
- Finally, the CatGenie dries the tray and granules using warm air.
Your cat will find its litter tray always fresh and clean!
Three activation options
- Cat Activation: Built-in GenieEyes detect use; cleaning starts automatically 10 or 30 minutes after the cat leaves.
- Automatic Start: Preset for up to 4 cleaning cycles per day.
- Manual Activation: Trigger cleaning manually using the START button.
Will my cat get used to the CatGenie, even if it’s used to a normal litter tray?
Yes. Sometimes it takes help and patience, but eventually every cat gets used to it. If possible, place the CatGenie in the spot of the old litter tray. Alternatively, leave the old litter tray nearby and stop cleaning it.
Cats quickly realise that a fresh, clean litter tray is more pleasant than an old, dirty one.

How long does the entire cleaning process take?
About 35 minutes.
How does the entire cleaning process work?
- The cat uses the litter tray.
- Sensors detect that the cat has left the tray; 10 minutes later, cleaning starts automatically.
- The GenieHand removes solid waste.
- Water and SaniSolution wash the litter and tray.
- Solid waste is liquefied in the hopper and drained into the drain.
- Hot air dries the litter and the inside of the tray.
- The litter tray is ready for use again.
Can I pause the cleaning cycle?
Yes, by pressing the Start/Pause button.
How much SaniSolution is needed?
For one cat, approximately 3.5 cartridges per year.
Can I buy additional SaniSolution cartridges?
Yes, replacement/additional cartridges are available.
